Depuis le début de sa carrière, l’approche scientifique d’Annie Rialland a associé perspectives phonétiques et phonologiques (phonologie autosegmentale, en particulier). Ses principaux domaines d’expertise sont la phonétique, la phonologie et les langues africaines. Elle a soutenu une thèse de 3ème cycle en 1978 à Paris et une thèse d’état en 1988 à Nice, portant en tout ou partie sur des langues voltaïques. Au fil des années, ses travaux ont progressivement couvert une large diversité de langues, principalement africaines (de diverses familles : voltaïque, mandé, atlantique, bantu) mais non exclusivement (français, langage sifflé de la Gomera). Elle a publié de nombreux articles dans des revues majeures (Phonology, Lingua, Linguistics, Bulletin de La Société de linguistique de Paris) et de nombreux chapitres d’ouvrages.

Elle a co-dirigé avec Jacqueline Vaissière le Laboratoire de Phonétique et Phonologie pendant 15 ans (entre 1991 et 2006). Elle a été directrice de thèses sur la phonétique et la phonologie d’une large variété de langues (berbère, langues bantu, japonais, entre autres). Elle a une grande expérience en projets de collaboration internationaux. Elle a ainsi dirigé avec Laura Downing un projet franco-allemand (BANTUPSYN) consacré à l’interface phonologie/syntaxe dans les langues bantu (2009-2012). Elle a été un des co-pilotes du projet DIAREF sur l’acquisition du langage par les enfants (2010-2013). Elle a été membre du projet franco-allemand BULB sur les technologies de la parole pour les langues sous-dotées et participe au projet CLD2025 en continuité avec BULB.  Elle a également été présidente de la Société de Linguistique de Paris en 2016.  En 2017, Elle a reçu un ‘Award of honour’ de la Société de Linguistique d’Afrique de l’Ouest. Depuis septembre 2019, elle est membre de la Europeae Academia.

Annie Rialland is currently Director of Research emeritus in the Laboratory of Phonetics and phonology in CNRS (Paris). From the beginning, her scientific approach combined phonetic and phonological perspectives (autosegmental phonology, in particular). Her main domains of expertise are phonetics, phonology, prosody, and African languages. She defended a doctoral thesis in 1978 in Paris and an habilitation in 1988 in Nice on African languages, with a focus on Gur languages. Over the years, her work concerned a large diversity of languages, mainly African (from various families : Gur, Mandé, Atlantic, Bantu) but also French or whistled language of La Gomera. She published many articles in major journals (Phonology, Lingua, Linguistics, Bulletin de La Société de linguistique de Paris) and many book chapters.

She co-directed with Jacqueline Vaissière the Laboratory of Phonetics and Phonology during 15 years (between 1991 and 2006). She supervised Doctoral theses on phonetics and phonology of a diversity of languages (Berber, Bantu languages, Japanese, among others). She has also a broad experience in international collaborative projects. Thus, she co-directed with Laura Downing a French-German project, BANTUPSYN devoted to Phonology/syntax Interface in Bantu languages (2009-2012). She was also one of the co-pilots of DIAREF, a project on child language acquisition (2010-2013). She is currently part of the French-German project, BULB, devoted to speech technologies for under-ressourced languages. She was Président of the Société de Linguistique de Paris in 2016. In 2017, she received an ‘Award of Honour’  from the West African Linguistic Society. Since September 2019, she is a member of the Europaeae Academia.
