Sustainability

Small steps for big changes.

The LPP is taking active steps to transition to sustainability with the appointment of two staff members to focus on this task, Anne Hermes and Barbara Kühnert. Their role is to make lab members aware of environmental issues and to coordinate concrete actions whose goal is to reduce the ecological impact of the lab’s activities. In collaboration with the lab directors, they are organizing discussions to identify innovative solutions and organize a plan of action. A variety of topics are being addressed such as responsible purchasing and sustainable travel. Some concrete measures that have already been put in place include:

  • Taking the train rather than the plane for trips of under four hours.
  • Choosing vegetarian food to reduce the carbon footprint of lab-organized events.
  • Producing an environmental status report: we will undertake a precise evaluation in order to create a balance sheet of greenhouse gas emissions and direct efforts to the most impactful actions.
  • Deleting emails: #delete10emailseverymonth and unsubscribe from unused services to reduce the environmental impact of digital storage.
  • Cutting back on purchasing: 85% of emissions created by the CNRS come from purchasing scientific and computer equipment. The LPP prioritizes environmentally-conscious suppliers and avoids websites that severely impact the environment such as Amazon. Purchasing is primarily done from French companies in the local area in order to reduce carbon impact.
