MonPaGe

Welcome

The MonPaGe-2.1.0-S protocol is designed to evaluate mild to moderate speech motor disorders in francophone adults. It was developed by a group of researchers and clinicians from four francophone regions (France, Switzerland, Belgium, and Quebec).

Administration of this speech assessment battery is computer-assisted. Patients’ productions are recorded, and perceptual and acoustic analyses are semi-automated. Using the protocol requires some knowledge of acoustic phonetics.

Administering the battery to a patient takes between 20 and 30 minutes in total. The first phase consists of several different modules (such as “intelligibility”, “pseudo-words”, etc., see Pernon et al., 2020) that are administered in sequence. In a second phase, which also takes 20 to 30 minutes, the clinician rates the recordings made during the first phase. Depending on the module, rating is either perceptual or acoustic (using Praat). The end result is an automated extraction of approximately twenty values that describe different aspects of the patient’s speech: voice, articulation, intelligibility; rate, prosody, and maximum performance for phonation and diadochokinesis.

After completion of the rating, two reports are generated. The first uses a percentile scale to compare the patient’s results to a reference population for each parameter that was evaluated. The second report gives deviation scores for each of the parameters that are included in the calculation of the Overall Deviation Score.

The norms used in MonPaGe-2.1.0-S come from a database of 404 speakers of four regional varieties of French: France (Paris), Belgium (Mons), Switzerland (Geneva), and Quebec (Montreal). See Fougeron et al., 2018.

The MonPaGe-2.1.0-S protocol was validated on 80 patients with different forms of dysarthria or with mild to moderate apraxia of speech, and 62 control speakers who were different from the speakers in the database used to establish the norm (Laganaro et al., 2020). The cut-off for Overall Deviation Score was a value greater than 2. Laganaro et al. (2020) showed that with this cut-off, the presence of a speech motor impairment can be diagnosed with a specificity of 95% and sensitivity of 83.8%, and that the Overall Deviation Score has a very strong correlation with an independent perceptual evaluation by six experts.

The MonPaGe-2.1.0-S protocol grew out of a larger project, enabling a variety of applications in research and clinical practice related to the evaluation of speech characteristics. The protocol itself is expected to evolve. The numerical values given in the reports at the end of the evaluation will depend on the specific version of the protocol that is used.

F.A.Q.

The Praat script for acoustic analysis won’t start, or it displays an error message. What should I do?

Make sure you have the latest version of Praat on your computer (version 6.2 or higher). You can see what version you have by going into Praat’s Help menu (at the right of the top menu bar), then click on “About Praat.”

What should I do if I have to stop in the middle of a session?

If you have to stop in the middle of a session for whatever reason, try to finish the module you are currently running. Otherwise you will have to re-do the entire unfinished module. If you restart on the same day, create a new participant (to avoid over-writing the preceding recordings with the new one), e.g., “Durand” and “Durand_continued”. If you restart on a different day, don’t create a new participant. Instead, select the existing participant (e.g. “Durand”) and restart the session. That will automatically create a second session, with a new folder identified by the date inside the participant folder.

What should I do if the patient does not complete the task correctly?

If the patient doesn’t follow the instructions for the task, restart the item if possible (using the ‘stop’ and ‘re-do’ buttons). The previous recording will be replaced by the new recording. Otherwise, explain the instructions again and re-start the module from the beginning. The previous recordings of the module from the same session will be automatically overwritten.

What should I do if the sound input or output doesn’t work correctly?

Check the settings for the microphone and sound in “System Settings/Sound/Input” on a Mac, or “Control Panel/Hardware and Audio/Recording” on a PC. Sometimes it is necessary to check these settings between two sessions, for example if the computer has gone to sleep in between.

What should I do if I am not able to make a recording?

We recommend closing MonPaGe between two recordings on the same day. If you have a problem making a recording, re-start MonPaGe and check that the sound card is connected properly and is recognized by the computer.

What should I do if the application doesn’t work anymore?

If the application stops working, quit and restart it. If necessary, force quit using Alt+F4 on a PC or Command+Option+Esc on a Mac. If that doesn’t work, restart your computer.

I have never used Praat. Does that prevent me from using MonPaGe?

That should not be a problem. Praat is only used for the acoustic rating. The functions that are used in MonPaGe are the most basic ones in Praat, even if choosing parameter values requires a modest knowledge of acoustic phonetics. Many resources are available for getting started with Praat. An excellent English-language site is Will Styler’s Using Praat for Linguistic Research. Some French-language resources are:

Where is my data stored? What folder should I copy for a backup?

Data are stored in the folder MonPaGe-2.0.2/data/participant. This entire folder must be saved in order to have a backup copy of your data.

How do I tell if I have the correct version of Python?

• On a Mac: in a Terminal window, type python3 -i to see which version you have. It needs to be 3.12 or higher.
• On a PC: in an MS-DOS window, type py -0 to see the versions listed. It needs to be 3.12 or higher.
You can find all this information in the Installation Guides (in the Resources tab).

Why are certain modules not included in either the acoustic or the perceptual rating?

In the MonPaGe-2.1.0-S version, we did not include a rating grid for the TEXT, DESCRIPTION, or SPONTANEOUS modules. These make it possible to collect continuous speech that the clinician can then use to evaluate the patient’s speech freely, or to do a perceptual evaluation using other tools.

What is the meaning of the different navigation buttons within the modules during administration of a session?

(or Esc) quits a module that has been started and returns to the home page (in order to quit the application, switch to a different module or restart a module, for example).
(or Enter or tab) stops recording an item within a module.
will restart presentation of an item within a module, thus restarting the recording of the item and deleting the previous recording of this item.
or space bar or right arrow will move to the next item or screen.
enables manual control of recording (for example in the DIADOCHOKINESIS module).

What is the meaning of the buttons in the dialogue box during Praat-assisted acoustic rating?

• STOP: stops acoustic scoring at any time. Praat will tell you that you have stopped the script. You can click OK and quit Praat. The analyses that have already been done will be saved, and when you restart the script you can pick up where you left off. If you’re unsure, at the end of the analysis you can always go back to any files that have not been processed, which will be flagged in the intermediate report.
• PASSER: moves to the next file without analyzing the currently displayed sound file (for example if the recording quality is poor making the acoustic data unusable, or if the content of the recording is not as expected, such as speech directed to the clinician, etc.)
• UNDO ou REVERT (depending on the version of Praat): reverts to the default values of all parameters when the dialogue box is opened (seldom useful in this context).

A Terminal window (on Mac) or command prompt (on Windows) opens when I launch MonPaGe. Is this normal? What should I do?

When you start lancer_passation or lancer_cotation, it is normal for a Terminal window or a command prompt window to open. Ignore it but do not close it, as that will close the application.
