Computerized Speech Lab (CSL)

Acoustic analysis of voice and speech

The speaker wears a head-mounted microphone, which makes it possible to maintain a fixed distance between the microphone and the lips, regardless of head movement. Two software suites are available on the Kay Elemetrics acquisition station: MDVP (Multi Dimensional Voice Profile) and CSL (Computerized Speech Lab). The MDVP software allows the user to define a voice profile and calculate more than 22 parameters for a recording of a prolonged vowel sound, such as temporal measures (frequency of vocal fold vibration, frequency and amplitude of instantaneous perturbation parameters) and frequency measures (spectrographic analysis of the acoustic signal). The values of the 22 parameters can be examined on the screen and compared to norms. Digital recording takes place directly on the computer. Various aspects of the speech signal can then be analyzed. Using this software, the voice can be analyzed acoustically and compared to normative data.
