Some neurological illnesses can create problems with oral expression, or problems can develop if our articulatory organs do not work properly. Understanding the causes of these problems is the first step towards learning to live with them. The explanatory factsheets in this booklet are intended for anyone who would like a better understanding of the processes that enable us to express ourselves orally, and how these processes may be altered for some people.
The booklet is organized into seven factsheets that were written by researchers and clinicians who are experts in the study of speech.
• What’s involved in speaking and expressing yourself orally?
• How do we articulate speech sounds ?
• What is your ‘voice’ and what are its characteristics?
• Why are speech and swallowing connected?
• How does breathing contribute to speech?
• Why is speaking such a complex ability?
• How does our brain transform an idea into a series of precise movements?
