The LPP has an ultrasound device (Mindray DP6600).

Technical information

Ultrasound imaging is used in phonetic research as a way to visualize dynamic images of the shape and movements of the tongue. The ultrasound probe is placed under the speaker’s chin. The visualization system converts the delay between sending and receiving the ultrasonic signal into images on a video screen, and thus makes it possible to see the shape of a large part of the tongue. The ultrasound system is used in experimental phonetic research and in teaching, as well as for clinical purposes with patients who have experienced a stroke or a glossectomy. The system is particularly suitable for speech therapy.

You can use the Edgetrak free software, which was developed at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
An alternative is the Matlab script developed by Thibaut Fux during his postdoc at the LPP.
